I gifted my 6 year old daughter this bike for Christmas. It is a nice looking bike, the frame is really sturdy, it wasn’t that bad to assemble (I work fine with tools) but it has a major issue with both front and back brakes! Such a main component! Front brakes get stuck (so bike is hard to move forward) and back brakes don’t work! Definitely their Achilles heal! The bike is not $50, not $100, not even $150… it is almost $200!!! With terrible brakes! Wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, not at that price range at least. Now I need to take it to a bike shop or request a refund and send it back, I don’t really know what I will do. It only adds more work to our already busy day, not to mention more money to spend on brake repair/upgrade ON A BRAND NEW BIKE! Just what I need. And my daughter is making the best out of it. But this in not what a new bike experience is supposed to be. Very disappointed …

I purchased this bike for my daughter for Christmas, and have initiated a return less than 24 hours later. The bike was missing screws for the reflector, no kickstand, the seat would not stay up, and the chain continued to pop off after riding for 10-15 minutes indoors (I fixed it at least 15 times in 24 hours) which seems to be an issue based on other reviews I have been reading. The back brake constantly made a squeaking noise mind you the bike never made it out of the garage (I didn't have it long enough). BMX usually produces a sturdy, reliable product maybe I received the 10% that slipped through the cracks. Either way, it has been returned for a refund and I wouldn't recommend it for purchase.

We got the mystery champagne color. In the photos on the website, the color has some pink in it. The bike I got has no pink. It is more green. The box says mystery champagne. I wonder if color correction is to blame or wrong color of bike used. My daughter will love it still when I suprise her with it. She is about to turn 4.

There is a scratch in the paint by the rear tire where it attaches to the body. Probably from assembly.

Spent a lot of time reading online about sizing bikes for a child who is learning to ride. I am no expert by any means but found lots of great sites explaining the key designs to the best beginner bikes. Brands such as Woom, Islabike, Guardian, Pello etc. have perfected low weight, long wheel base/top bar, narrow q factor bikes to make learning to ride easier for little ones. Unfortunately they also cost 3x the price of this bike. Again, I am not an expert cyclist nor do I have personal experience with those nicer and pricey brands to give first hand comparisons. Thus the following comparisons are based on published specs and components. While this NiceC bike isn't on the level of those top brands in quality and build it does appear the NiceC offers quite a bit for what it costs. In fact I was not able to find any other new 16" bike in the price range that even came with handbrakes or was under 20 lbs, much less both (although lack of the coaster brake likely is a large part of lower weight).

I purchased 2 of these 16" bikes for twins that will be turning 6 in another month. My son is 46 lbs and 46.5 inches tall. He has an inseam of ~19 inches. His sister is 47 lbs and 47.5 inches tall with an inseam of 20". Neither is able to ride without training wheels, my son has lots of balance bike practice while my daughter has mostly practiced on training wheels.

After learning more about sizing, I was very tempted to return at least my daughters NiceC to purchase a larger bike. They really both are on the large size for these 16" bikes however since they still don't ride without training wheels I have decided to keep them for this season (will explain rationale in greater detail below). Doing this knowing next season they will be ready for 20" bikes if pedaling without training wheels this year. I figure I can recoup some of the cost in selling the NiceC next year and will keep the boys bike for our current 15 month old for when he is big enough.

A few things why I take a star away in my rating:
1) The sizing chart height ranges in the photo seem way too wide based on research elsewhere on the web how to size a bicycle. Based on external research the 16" NiceC is smallish for a 47" tall child and a rider that has skill in balance and pedaling at that size likely should have a larger bike. The wheel base and cockpit (top tube length) are okay, but not great. The bicycle length in the photos is reported to be 42.5", however in my measurements it is actually 44.5". I measured a wheel base of 28.25" which is comparable to other 16" sized bikes. The Woom 3 is spec'd at 28.03", the Royalbaby line lists a 28.5" wheel base and my kids current 16" huffy junk bikes are also similar length. The Woom 3 Top tube length is 15.75" while I measured the NiceC at just 12"-13" (depending on seat position and measured angle). This may seem insignificant, however for my daughters long legs she will be a bit cramped. While not matching the top tube/cockpit space of the highest of the high end, it is comparable to the huffy bikes we currently have. Unable to find any specs on the Royalbaby bikes for this measure but expect it to be similar to Huffy/NiceC here. Verified this with my daughter on the bike, her legs/knees are fairly close to the handle bars but will work great without pedals, and then will adjust the height and angle of the seat/bars to make a bit more space for pedaling.
2) Instructions - it really was pretty intuitive, however the instructions actually were more confusing than just looking at pictures and putting it together. If I had no experience in working on bikes it would have been annoying as some of the instructions don't even need to be completed as the bike comes 90% assembled. They do a great job including all the tools needed which was nice. and are good to keep for future projects. I did need a pliars to tighten the seat clamp enough to prevent it slipping. Now the quick release works great.
3) Uncertain quality/brand. The frame and components can be found if you google "magnesium alloy china bike frame", "Menkin brake lever". These are both made by companies in China and don't appear to have any reliable info online about the quality or safety. Was not able to find anything about the Duoder rear disk brake. Since these are starting bikes and don't expect my 6 year old's to have extreme or even moderate riding conditions I don't have safety concerns. However would not put my trust in these components for street riding at high speeds. That said, they seem to function fine and reliably. The brake levers are plastic, will update after the season is over if any observations can be made.
4) The tire in some of the photos have knobby tread while other photos are smoother tread. I received the smoother tread and it appears that the knobby tread is from older versions, or it is just random what you get. I would have preferred the knobby tread for gravel and dirt.

While I still think the cockpit is a bit small for my daughter (will definitely be too small in a year) am going to keep it and give it a try. I do not plan on using training wheels on these. For a child that still hasn't learned to ride (without training wheels) it is important to be able to place both feet flat on the ground while learning. So for my kids it should work out. Also inseam is much more important indicator of size than height and based on the minimum seat positions and my kids size, this should work out. I still likely would have purchased an 18" NiceC (if it were possible) for my daughter instead of the 16". Hopefully this will be offered in the future. Watch some YouTube movies about learning to ride by balance first and avoid training wheels hopefully.

The things I really like about the bike:
1) Frame and weight - the magnesium alloy is light weight and the design looks pretty cool. Other color options would be good however the champagne and pink look really good. It seems strong and from no past reviews mentioning cracks in the metal I expect it will be durable. The frame kinda looks like a lightning bolt, I am not sure if we will add any other stickers/decals as it looks pretty good naked. The weight really is the main standout for this bike over other models in the price range, looks cool and is light weight. I measured 17.9 lbs without the training wheels (which I plan to leave off). For comparison our Huffy bikes are 22 lbs and 20.5 lbs, while the Royalbaby Freestyle is at least 24 lbs. The Woom 3 is only 11.7 lbs, however in this price I wasn't able to find any other bike under 20lbs. Most adults ride bikes that are only 20% of their body weight. This isn't possible for kids, but something <40% is ideal and this bike meets that requirement.
2) Dual hand brakes - after reading and knowing my kids experience with pedal braking (frustrated by bike stopping abruptly when learning to pedal) having hand breaks was mandatory. There are legal reasons that most companies sell bikes with coaster breaks, but think my kids will do better learning to pedal/balance with hand breaks. I plan to have them start using these bikes without pedals and learn to balance and break prior to putting the pedals on. In this price range you will not find new bikes with dual hand break and NO coaster. The disk brake is a cool upgrade (i think). It seems to function well and offers fast breaking ability although haven't been on the roads yet to verify.

This bike is way better than the Huffy and Royalbaby bikes sold here and big wally stores. I really wish there were a 18" version but I think it will work for a season with my relatively tall 6 year old daughter. She may be a little cramped but will update after she is ridding some. The light weight frame and lack of a coaster brake make this bike in a weight class well above its sale price. Additionally the dual hand brakes including rear disk brake is a valued feature of this bike. It looks really cool as it comes and was easy to assemble although the directions are not very clear if you are not handy. Very excited for my kids to use these once it warms up a little.

Update 3/24/19: Kids took first rides this weekend and pedaling without training wheels on day 2. On day one they did a few downhill rides to learn balancing these bikes and how to use the brakes. Day 2 we added pedals and there were going on the first try.

New complaints: The brakes (especially disc brakes) needed adjustment and are not super easy to adjust, still have pad rubbing on the disc and was not able to fully eliminate after 2 hours working on them. To adjust the disc brake you need a number 5 allen wrench. Do not adjust the part of the brake that is a different size as it will completely come apart. Adjust only the 2 top and right side screws. The two on top are used to center the brake over the disc. The one on the right allows fine tuning of the right pad. I think the discs are not completely flat as there is still some rub, will eventually take to professional to see if they can tune it. The silver bike front tire is out of round a little and causes uneven wear on the front brake pads. The tube for the seat and quick release require pliers to tighten. Small plastic piece between the seat tube and clamp seems cheap and concerning how it will hold up over time, because of non-standard tube, there likely is no way to replace it.

Despite the few problems and concerns for long-term durability, I am very happy with the bikes overall. Stand by the original review as value for a low weight bike that doesn't have a coaster brake. The bike does well for purpose I intended which was to be a good learning bike for 6 year old using the NO training wheel/NO coaster brake method of learning to ride. Both my kids were riding on second day of doing this (total time less than 2 hours). If you are going to try, you really need to spend some time reviewing the step to teach this and potential risks of not having a coaster brake (need to teach how to use hand brake prior to learning to pedal). Make sure the size is right, to use without pedals as a balance bike the child should be able to have both feet flat on the ground while sitting on the bike. Watch the YouTube videos on this. The down side to this is my kids are almost already too big for this bike, but knew that going in and ready to buy larger (likely used) bikes next season when the many variables important to learning to ride are not as critical for an experienced rider.
